Musicians of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra

Jack Schantz

Jack joined the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra in 1988 after touring extensively and soloing with the Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw and Woody Herman Orchestras. He has been the CJO artistic director since 1993 and has led the CJO in its annual series of big band concerts as well as a number of special performances. During Cleveland's Duke Ellington celebration, Schantz led the CJO in an Ellington concert at the Cleveland Museum of Art and in a joint concert with the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center. As a trumpet soloist, Schantz has also been featured on several albums including “An Oscar Peterson Christmas,” “Speechless” (with his own quartet) and “Choices” (with his 14-piece modern jazz group, the Bop Stop Jazz Unit). A native of Orrville, Ohio, Jack is Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Akron.
