CJO Bassist Dave Morgan Releases New CD - "The Way of the SlyMan"

This brilliant 2010 recording, featuring Morgan, Howie Smith, Dan Wall, Jack Schantz and Jamey Haddad, is a musical representation of the Fourth Way principles of the mystic G.I. Gurdjieff. The nine-part suite was made possible by a grant from Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Charitable Trust.

Wendell Logan Passes Away at 69

Wendell Logan, who legitimized jazz studies at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, died early Tuesday evening at the Cleveland Clinic. His death comes mere weeks after he helped celebrate the opening of the $24 million Bertram and Judith Kohl Building, an architectural and technological marvel—it’s the first musical facility in the world to warrant top Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating—designed to heighten the profile of jazz at Oberlin.

Logan was 69. He was Chair, Jazz Studies and Professor of African American Music.

When Logan came to Oberlin in 1973, jazz was an extracurricular activity; the focus was on classical music. In 1989, after Logan designed its curriculum, jazz became a major. Two years later, college rules were rewritten to allow students to enroll on the basis of jazz talent. Now, the jazz faculty at Oberlin spans eight professors including such luminaries as the trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, the saxophonist Gary Bartz, and the guitarist Bobby Ferrazza.
The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra will be performing around the area throughout the summer.  Here's a list of concerts and venues.

The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra has introduced the Jazz Cheapskate Society, a society based on the ongoing stuggles of jazz musicians throughout the United States.  Give $24.99 and help the CJO and get a free ticket to an upcoming CJO concert.  In the end, all charter members of this "Great Society" are in a penny since the cost of an adult ticket to a CJO concert is $25.00.  Cleveland Jazz Orchestra president Dan Leibundgut states "in a tough economy it's hard to give to your favorite organizations, we decided to have a little fun with this program limiting it to a $24.99 donation (which is tax deductable) and a goal of 100 charter members.  Each charter member will receive a Surprise of Being - Live at Birdland CD.  Donate to the CJO and get some great music, you can't beat it. The program will continue throughout the rest of the 2008-09 subscription season and as Leibundgut puts it, "we'll see what other interesting fundraising ideas we can come up with."  To donate and become a "Member of Society",
