"Mardi Gras Gets the Gospel"
Saturday, April 23, 2022, 7:30 p.m.Maltz Performing Arts Center
The ecstasy of New Orleans meets the joy of the gospel as the CJO combines forces with local gospel choirs, featuring Adrianna Miller.
A note from Artistic Director Paul Ferguson:
This concert affords the CJO a chance to make special outreach to a section of our community that is responsible for some of the best things about jazz-the Black gospel music tradition. Why this even ranks as outreach is a bit of a puzzle as it is, since gospel music is integral to jazz. It's a little like reaching out to bebop or the blues! But it does involve creating new relationships and enhancing old ones. I've been honored to become friends with Johnny Parker of RHEMA Fellowship Church, Adrianna Miller of Solomon's Temple Church of God in Christ, Jonathon Turner of Israelite Missionary Baptist Church and Lutheran High School East, as well as work with old friend Dr. David Thomas. Our choir is composed of individuals from their choirs, as well as scatterings of other churches in the area.Whether it be jazz/classical, the sacred/profane or body/mind/spirit, the distinctions can be blurry. Are they really opposites, or simply different sides of the same coin? With this concert, we try to reveal exhilaration in all of its dimensions. Joy can be exoteric or esoteric, spur of the moment or deeply planned, implicit or explicit. Jazz and African American gospel music share a common ethos, mainly, "Let's try it like this." I hope you enjoy our efforts!
