"The Art of the Jazz Violin"

Friday, May 20, 2022, 7:30 p.m.Maltz Performing Arts Center

The CJO season will finish with MacArthur Genius Award winning violinist, Regina Carter, who will help us celebrate 38 years of bringing jazz to Northeast Ohio.

A note from Artistic Director Paul Ferguson:

Our guest artist, Regina Carter, is a case study in all that makes jazz great–talent (genius, even), persistence, innovation, diversity and derring-do. Her recorded output runs the gamut from original compositions, classical works, the great American songbook, ethnic music and much more. Quite a privilege to arrange a few pieces for her.

But it only takes a few moments with Regina to realize that under the serious artistic exterior is a genuine approachable personality, that is, someone who understands there is no music without someone to play for and with whom to perform. In other words, "Let's play!"

The violin is a rare jazz instrument. Women are underrepresented. Female jazz composers are rare. Regina brings it all together in a dynamic and thoroughly winning package.

Another highlight of tonight’s performance is that we have a chance for two MacArthur geniuses to meet–Susan McClary, a musicologist at Case, and our guest artist, Regina Carter–offering a tremendous amount of intellectual energy in one room. Although Susan's work deals more with a modern feminist approach to music history, Regina lives the history through her compositions and electrifying performances.

Enjoy!
